Eschscholzia californica — California poppy

Eschscholzia californica is the botanical name for the California poppy, a sun-loving annual whose silky, cup-shaped flowers in glowing orange, gold, cream and rose open above feathery blue-green foliage. It sits within our poppy and wider flower seed collections.

History & origin

The official state flower of California, it carpets hillsides of the American west in spring, thriving on dry, sunny, poor ground. That heritage makes it one of the easiest and most drought-proof flowers to scatter and grow.

The genus honours Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz, a Baltic-German naturalist on a Russian Pacific expedition; californica records where the plant was first described.

Botanical characteristics

A wiry, low annual, the California poppy bears finely cut, blue-green leaves and a long succession of satiny, four-petalled cups that close at night and in dull weather. Tough, sun-loving and undemanding, it is a star of our drought-tolerant flowers and a natural for relaxed wildflower and gravel plantings.

Growing Eschscholzia californica from seed

Sow direct where it is to flower, in autumn or spring; it has a long taproot and dislikes being moved, so do not transplant. Give it full sun and poor, free-draining soil, and it will self-seed for years. Our flower growing guide and flower sowing calendar cover the timing.
