Petunia hybrida — garden petunia

Petunia hybrida is the botanical name for the garden petunia, the trumpet-flowered bedding favourite that pours colour from pots, baskets and borders all summer long. It is the species group behind our petunia range within the flower seed collection.

History & origin

The garden petunia is a hybrid, raised in nineteenth-century Europe from wild South American species. Those crosses combined the fragrance and vigour of their parents into the floriferous bedding plants that have been a summer mainstay ever since.

The name petunia derives from petun, a word for tobacco in Tupi-Guarani, reflecting the plant's close botanical kinship with tobacco; hybrida simply marks its hybrid origin.

Botanical characteristics

A tender perennial grown as an annual, the petunia forms spreading, free-branching plants covered in wide, funnel-shaped flowers in almost every colour, many softly scented in the evening. Compact and trailing types alike spill beautifully from containers, making it a star of our container-friendly flowers.

Growing Petunia hybrida from seed

Sow under cover in early spring; the tiny seed needs light to germinate, so press it onto the surface and do not cover. Grow on warm, then plant out after the last frost in full sun. Our flower growing guide and flower sowing calendar cover the timing.
