Garlic chives seeds — mild garlic flavour, pretty white flowers

Garlic chives bring a gentle, garlicky note to the kitchen without the fuss of growing bulbs. Botanically they are Allium tuberosum — also known as Chinese chives — and a much-loved member of our culinary herb range. If you are new to growing herbs, our herb growing guide is the perfect starting point.

These hardy perennials are easy from seed and come back year after year — the herb calendar shows when to sow.

Flat leaves with a garlic twist

Unlike the hollow, round leaves of common chives, garlic chives have flat, strappy foliage and a distinct mild-garlic taste that suits stir-fries, dumplings, eggs and salads. Their starry white late-summer flowers are edible too and loved by bees. As a reliable, long-lived plant they belong among our perennial herbs, and they grow happily in a pot on the patio with our container-friendly herbs.

Growing garlic chives from seed

Sow in spring in trays or directly into well-drained soil, and keep the surface lightly moist until seedlings appear — germination can be a little slow, so patience pays off. Once established, plants need very little care, thriving in sun or light shade and forming neat clumps that can be divided every few years. Snip leaves regularly to encourage fresh, tender growth.

Easy, ornamental and endlessly useful in the kitchen — explore where to grow them next.
