Mizuna seeds — feathery Japanese salad greens

Mizuna is one of the easiest and most rewarding salad leaves you can grow: feathery, deeply serrated greens with a mild, fresh mustard tang. It sits among our Asian greens and broader fresh leafy greens, all within our vegetable seeds. New to leaf crops? Our vegetable growing guide is a friendly place to start.

Cut-and-come-again means a few sowings keep your salad bowl full for months.

Why grow mizuna

Mizuna is fast, hardy and forgiving — ready to pick in weeks, happy in cooler weather, and far less prone to bolting than many salads. Young leaves add a gentle peppery lift to mixed bowls; older ones are lovely wilted into stir-fries and soups, much like its cousin tatsoi and the rest of our fast-growing vegetables.

Growing mizuna from seed

Sow direct or in trays from spring to autumn, thinly into moist soil, and keep cutting once the leaves are a few inches tall. It thrives in part shade and cool conditions, making it ideal for spring and autumn sowings and even winter under cover. The sowing calendar shows the windows, and our germination guide covers the basics.

It crops beautifully in pots and window boxes too — just keep the compost moist and pick often.

Popular vegetable categories: Fresh Leafy Greens · Asian Greens · Tatsoi · Lettuce · Spinach

What does mizuna taste like?
Young leaves have a mild, fresh mustard tang — peppery but gentle. Older leaves are stronger and best cooked into stir-fries or soups. How quickly does mizuna grow?
Very quickly. Baby leaves are ready to cut in around three weeks, and plants regrow after each picking for repeat harvests. Does mizuna bolt easily?
It's more bolt-resistant than many salads and thrives in cool weather, which makes it ideal for spring, autumn and even winter sowings under cover. Can I grow mizuna in containers?
Yes. It does very well in pots and window boxes — keep the compost moist, sow thinly and pick leaves regularly.
