Tatsoi seeds — glossy spoon-shaped Asian greens

Tatsoi forms a neat, ground-hugging rosette of glossy, spoon-shaped leaves with a mild, sweet-mustard flavour — one of the prettiest and hardiest of the Asian greens. It's part of our wider fresh leafy greens and full vegetable seeds range. New to growing greens? Our vegetable growing guide covers the essentials.

Remarkably cold-tolerant, tatsoi keeps cropping when most salads have given up for the year.

Why grow tatsoi

It's fast, mild and endlessly useful — baby leaves for salads, whole rosettes for the steamer or wok. Like its relative mizuna, it shrugs off cool weather and crops well into autumn and winter, earning its place among our fast-growing vegetables.

Growing tatsoi from seed

Sow direct or in modules from late summer into autumn for the best results, thinly into moist, fertile soil. Pick individual leaves young or let plants form full rosettes; cooler conditions keep the flavour sweet and slow bolting. The sowing calendar shows the windows, and our germination guide helps the fine seed along.

A cloche or cold frame keeps tatsoi standing through the coldest months for fresh winter greens.

What does tatsoi taste like?
Mild and sweet with a gentle mustardy note — milder than rocket or mizuna. Lovely raw in salads or lightly cooked. How cold-hardy is tatsoi?
Very. It tolerates frost well and, under a cloche or cold frame, often crops right through winter when other salads have stopped. When is the best time to sow tatsoi?
Late summer into autumn gives the best results, as cool conditions keep it sweet and slow to bolt. Spring sowings work too but may run to seed faster. How do I harvest tatsoi?
Pick outer leaves young for salads, or cut whole rosettes for steaming and stir-fries. Regular picking encourages fresh growth.
