Butternut squash seeds — sweet, nutty winter keepers

Butternut is the best-loved of the winter squashes — a smooth, pear-shaped fruit with dense, sweet orange flesh that stores for months. It belongs to our wider gourds & squash range and sits among our full vegetable seeds. If you're new to it all, our vegetable growing guide walks you through every step.

One healthy plant can ripen several fruits — cure them in the sun and they'll feed you well into winter.

Why grow butternut

Few vegetables reward a little patience like butternut: rich, velvety soups, roasting wedges and a long larder life from a single autumn harvest. The trailing plants need room but are otherwise forgiving — a satisfying step up for anyone already growing the quicker types among our summer squash and pumpkins.

Growing butternut squash from seed

Butternut needs a long, warm season. Sow indoors in mid to late spring, plant out after frost into rich, sunny ground, and let it sprawl. Water and feed generously while the fruits swell, then leave them to ripen and harden before the first frosts. The sowing calendar shows the timing, and our germination guide gets the seeds off to a strong start.

In cooler spots, start early and grow against a warm wall to be sure of ripe fruit.

How long does butternut squash take to grow?
Butternut needs a long, warm season — roughly four to five months from sowing to ripe, storable fruit, so sow early indoors. How do I know when butternut is ripe?
The skin turns matt tan, hardens so a fingernail won't easily mark it, and the stem starts to cork and dry. Harvest before the first frost. How do I store butternut squash?
Cure ripe fruits in the sun or a warm room for a week or two, then keep them somewhere cool, dry and frost-free — they'll last for months. Can I grow butternut in a cool climate?
Yes, but start seeds indoors, choose an earlier variety and grow in the warmest, sunniest spot you have to be sure the fruit ripens.
